I love reading the stories that inspired particular songs. "Where Could I Go But To The Lord" has a touching story. It was written in 1940 by J. B. Coats. Mr. Coats began writing songs and leading singings around the age of 14. The story behind this song was inspired before that. Mr. Coats was sitting next to a dying neighbor and he asked the gentleman if he knew where he would spend eternity. The old gentleman profoundly stated, "Where Could I Go But To The Lord?'" Those words stuck with Mr. Coats and several years later, while teaching a singing school, he wrote this song.
Growing up, I will always remember listening to Mom's Elvis albums and his soulful rendition of this one. Another one of my favorites is Emily Lou Harris recording on Angle Band. I could go on and on about those that have recorded it over the years. How about I post today a Gaither link with lots of those great old singers sharing "Where Could I Go But To The Lord"? I pray you will enjoy!
I pray you will have a blessed Wednesday!
