I woke up with heaven on my mind. I woke up with joy in my soul, 'cause I knew my Lord had control."
What an awesome way to wake up this morning! "I'm Feeling Fine" was written by Mosie Lister I suppose sometime in the early 1950's as I have been hearing it sung since I was a kid. But I don't recall hearing it lately. I love so many of the songs written by Mr. Lister and I know you would recognize many of the songs by the title even though you may not know he was the writer.
I feel so fortunate that my parents took me to church, where old time singing and preaching was the way it was. Foot stomping upbeat songs as the one I woke up to this morning, songs of praise and worship, songs that left an indelible mark in my heart and created my love of songs of God's love for us.
My cousin and I was on the phone last night and I reminded him of a story that happened just a few days before my sweet Dad died. Dad's pastor, Brother Dean and I was sitting on opposite sides of Dad's bed. Dean said, "Jake, I understand you use to sing in a quartet in your younger days." As Dad spoke, Dean and I had to lean over to hear him with his very weak voice he acknowledged he did. But Dad, being Dad, turned the conversation away from him and kind of pointed towards me and said he did too. Dean inquired and I told him I did when I was younger but I retired. Dad again being Dad said in a little stronger voice, "he didn't retire, he quit". Well, Dad even in his final hours on this earth, he was still telling it like it was. I love my Dad for many reasons, but his love for Gospel music is something that I will take with me all the way through this life and I look forward to singing with him again one day!
