Open my eyes that I might see. Open my ears that I can hear. May we listen for God's call upon our lives to arise and go. Yesterday was an awesome day to be in the House of our Lord!
I think I have always been a curious type person. If there is something that I don't know, I'll try to do some research or ask questions. I've heard it said most of my life, God gave you two ears and one mouth so you should listen twice as much as you talk. I never learned that lesson too good and if I had listened more, maybe I would be much smarter and wiser. There are so many things that I don't understand, especially today. I read the scriptures for answers and I pray asking God to give me greater understanding. (I would say those are pretty good resources, wouldn't you?) But even still, my simple little human mind has difficulty grasping so much of the things that happen to us or see the things going on around us. I find myself scratching my head, and often say, we will understand it all in the sweet by and by.
I believe Rev. Charles A. Tindley captured my thoughts today so well when he wrote this old hymn back in 1905, He had been called to pastor a church he was once the janitor. The congregation did not wildly accept him as their new pastor since 15 years earlier he served as their janitor. But his powerful, gripping sermons soon was bringing very loud "Amens". As the church grew, they decided to purchase another church with greater space. It was during these days of difficult negotiations when Rev. Tindley wrote "We'll Understand It Better By And By" and seven other songs. These eight songs are just a few of the many written by this remarkable self taught individual and great Church pastor.
"We'll Understand It Better By and By" is one of those old songs I grew up hearing in church. More recently, I have heard it on several of the Gaither videos. I hope you will enjoy hearing it this morning!
