I love when God wakes me up with a song that takes me way back to my childhood. "Way Down Deep In My Soul" is a song I remember the Merritt's Ave Baptist Church Quartet singing and I loved it. The last time I wrote about a song I remembered them singing, I tried to spend time that day reflecting of these fine people and the impact they had on my life. Of course, I was young, but one thing I remember (besides their singing) was they were faithful, at church every time I believe the church doors were opened.
I am blessed to have the album collection of Zelda, the female member of the quartet. I had the pleasure of having her son in law as one of my senior executives during my working career. One day following the passing of his wife, he called and said he had something that he thought I would enjoy and wanted me to have them. It was Zelda's record collection. Perhaps, silly to a lot of people but I was thrilled to receive these. Not only were there some old classic recordings but more importantly, they were Zelda's and he wanted me to have them. I wouldn't take anything for them.
During the years I was doing some quartet singing, I had the privilege of singing back at the old home church on several occasions. It was always a great homecoming and seeing all of the members was awesome. But the part I enjoyed most, was while I was singing, I was standing right above the exact place, the altar where I was saved. Do you remember the old song, "I Can Tell You The Time. I Can Take You To The Place"? I can and I wrote about this song on January 17th.
I wish I had recordings of the Merritt's Ave. Quartet but I don't, only the memories that are very vivid. "Way Down Deep In My Soul' was one that they sang, but I don't remember too many other groups singing it. As I scrolled through You Tube this morning to find a link to post, I was reminded of The LeFevres, The Blackwood Brothers, and several others who recorded it. But one of my favorites that I found was of The Happy Two which is Leroy Abernathy and Shorty Bradford singing as a quartet.
The LeFevres recording comes the closet to my memory of the Merritt's Quartet, so I will post it and I hope you will enjoy.
I will also post the link to The Happy Two. I think you may enjoy this also!
I hope you have an amazing Saturday!
