The Unclouded Day

It seems as if I say the same things every morning! I am truly amazed to be awaken each day with a blessed old hymn and often one that I have not heard in a long time. "The Unclouded Day" is one of those old hymns that I remember being sung often in church over the years but I do not recall hearing it recently until this morning.

"The Unclouded Day" was written in 1885 by Josiah K. Atwood. Rev. Atwood was considered to be a "circuit rider" traveling by horseback to deliver his sermons to his various appointments. It was while traveling back home one evening he noticed a rainbow against the backdrop of a terrible black stormy cloud. The next morning, he awoke to a beautiful bright sky! Originally the song was titled, "A Rainbow At Midnight" and "A Song With Morning". I continue to be amazed at the words of so many of these old hymns and how perfect they are for the days we are living today. I believe they had to be divinely inspired when they were written and their purpose is to give comfort, joy, hope for all for the years to follow.

"Oh, they tell me of a home far beyond the skies, Oh, they tell me of a home far away; Oh, they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise, Oh, they tell me of an unclouded day.

Chorus Oh, the land of cloudless day, Oh, the land of an unclouded sky, Oh, they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise, Oh, they tell me of an unclouded day.

Oh, they tell me of a home where my friends have gone, Oh, they tell me of that land far away, Where the tree of life in eternal bloom Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day.

Oh, they tell me of a King in His beauty there, And they tell me that mine eyes shall behold Where He sits on the throne that is whiter than snow, In the city that is made of gold.

Oh, they tell me that He smiles on His children there, And His smile drives their sorrows all away; And they tell me that no tears ever come again In that lovely land of unclouded day."

The Staple Singers made this song popular in 1956. Mavis Staple, at 16 years old, sang the deep voiced, soulful vocals, that many thought was that of an older woman or even a man. Willie Nelson sang this in 1998 as part of the Farm Aid concert heard around the country. It is said, that the pop singer, Bob Dylan's music was greatly influenced by this song. Many others across all music genres have sung and recorded "The Unclouded Day".

I loved waking to this old hymn and I hope you will enjoy hearing "The Unclouded Day" this morning!
