"Hallelujah, I'm saved, saved, saved by his wonderful grace!" What an awesome way to start my day even if (or maybe especially since) I had an early morning trip to Birmingham.
Years ago, the church I grew up in as a teenager had a reunion, a homecoming of sorts, at Stone Mountain Park. It was held under one of the picnic pavilions. A PA system was set up along with a keyboard and it was a night of singing and fellowship. I do not recall my exact age, but believe I was in my early 30's. This was the first time I had seen most of the people since I had stopped going to this church in my late teens. It was a great time!
The boy's quartet would sing a couple of songs. I remember singing songs we had sung as teenagers. But we also, sang "Thank God I Am Free". I'm not sure why we sang this song, because then and now, I have no recollection of us ever singing this song during our teen years. I think that was the first time I had ever sung it and honestly, I believe it was the last. (I was thinking as we were singing, "I'm sure glad I know this song". LOL) Certainly, I knew "Thank God I Am Free" as I heard it sung often by many individuals and groups (but just not by me LOL).
I suspect this memory may have come back to me as a result of a CD I have been listening too. Brother Roger gave the choir members a CD of 16 songs, that he plans on us learning and singing over the next several weeks. One of the songs on the CD was arranged to include a couple of lines from, "Thank God I Am Free". Brother Roger, you have picked some amazing songs for the choir and I look forward to trying to sing all of them.
"Thank God I Am Free" was written by a Pentecostal preacher, Rev. James McFall. I read where he was better known as a pastor and preacher than for his song writing. But he wrote over 300 songs and was recorded by many like, The Goodmans, The Gaithers, The Hemphills, JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet and many others as well. I hope you will enjoy the link I decided to post to share my morning song.
