A beautiful song to wake up to this Sunday Morning!
There's a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord; There are sweet expressions on each face, And I know they feel the presence of the Lord. Sweet Holy Spirit, Sweet heavenly Dove, Stay right here with us, filling us with Your love. And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; Without a doubt we'll know that we have been revived, When we shall leave this place. There are blessings you cannot receive Till you know Him in His fullness and believe; You're the one to profit when you say, "I am going to walk with Jesus all the way." If you can't say He saved you from your sin, Now you're weak, you're bound and cannot enter in, You can make it right if you will yield, You'll enjoy the Holy Spirit that we feel.
This song was written by Doris Akers in 1962. It is considered to be a "national treasure" by the Smithsonian Institute and has been sung by thousands world wide. One Sunday morning as her choir was preparing for the morning service and concluding with the usual prayer, she was concerned and told the members she was afraid they had not prayed enough. Even though they had prayed as they felt "normal" they began to pray again with renewed fervor. As they were praying in earnest, Ms. Akers began to wonder how she could stop this awesome prayer meeting. But realizing the service was waiting, she stated she hated to leave due to the "sweet sweet spirit" that was in that place. Later she penned the words, to what is probably her best known song.
Probably all of you know and have heard this song many times. I do not recall the first time I ever heard it but remember and have loved it over the years. I think, what makes this song so remarkable for me is how often, the song leader, music director or whoever would just begin and ask the congregation to sing with them totally unplanned. It was truly an acknowledgment of the Sweet Holy Spirit moving in that place.
But we don't have to sing a song to know that sweet spirit and feel the presence of the Lord. I will enjoy being in church this morning and seeing the sweet expressions on each face. As the choir sings, with each prayer spoken, with the message from God's word, our hearts will be lifted in praise. I believe I will leave East Gadsden Baptist Church this morning with my heart revived and I will be able to say "It was good to be in the house of the Lord."!
Praying for a special and wonderful Sunday for each of us!
