I love songs where we sing about Heaven, Jesus and God's Love for us. I couldn't be any happier to wake up to the old hymn "Sing Me A Song About Jesus" . It even has a bass lead in the chorus. Can it get any better? :)
G.T. "Dad" Spear wrote this song in 1956 (2 years after I was born so now you know it's a old song). It has been sung many times by many groups, choirs and congregations. I remember it sung in church when I was just a young kid and it has always been one of my favorites. Affectionally known as "Dad" Spear wrote many gospel songs and hymns during his life and I always think of them as "happy" songs and they have brought joy to millions over the years. "Dad" also founded the "The Speer Family" in 1921 and they sang almost entirely as a family throughout their career until the group was retired during the 1993 National Quartet Convention. "Dad" and "Mom" both went to their heavenly home in the mid 60's with the siblings carrying on the family tradition. Even during retirement, several of the siblings continued with the tradition often being featured on the Gaither videos and the Stamps Baxter Music School. It would be hard to imagine, with this kind of singing tradition, there aren't some younger Speer grandkids and great grandchildren not singing today.
During these times that may be stressful and we see fear and panic around us, I loved waking up to "Sing Me A Song About Jesus". My day has been made brighter and outside the darkness has not even turned to day yet! Now be warned, if you listen to the links, be prepared to pat your foot a little. And also, if you remember the song, don't be surprised if you walk around singing it all day! I kind of like the thought of that!
I hope you will enjoy the first link. This is from one of the Stamps Baxter Music Schools. I remember listening to this version over and over again when I was recovering in Long Term Care. It brought back so many wonderful memories of growing up and hearing and singing this song.
And I thought it only appropriate to also provide a link of "The Speer Family" singing on their album titled "Golden Anniversary".
I pray you will have a happy, safe and stay well Tuesday!
