I could skip writing my post this morning and just share Ms. Sandy's Facebook post this morning. It appears, God has us on the same page this morning as she shared a post of Vestal Goodman and George Jones singing "Oh, Come, Angel Band".
"Angel Band" was written in 1860 by Jefferson Hascall and has been published in numerous hymnals. I'm not certain when I first heard this old song but I believe it was with the Merritts Ave. Quartet as a young kid. But whenever I first heard it, the words and music have stuck with me. Gerald, I believe this may have been one of the "crowd favorites" on chicken wing night. I remember several other occasions when a group of friends would sit around a living room or a campfire if someone had a guitar (actually a guitar wasn't needed LOL) and we would sing "Angel Band" and other hymns.
I was thrilled in about 1987 when Emily Lou Harris recorded an album titled "Angel Band" . Emily Lou was one of my favorite pop/folk/country artists and I loved her singing, playing and songwriting. This album included some of my favorite songs and I played it over and over and over again. Of course "Angel Band" is included on this album.
"Oh, Come, Angel Band" has been recorded by many across several musical genres. It was a featured song in the movie, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou'. In fact, I'm a little late with my post this morning as I have been listening on You Tube to so many of the artists who have recorded this song. ( Can I post them all? LOL) I have heard blue grass, traditional country, gospel and even The Atlanta Master Chorale (pretty sophisticated sounding stuff LOL). Well, you already have one version thanks to sweet Ms. Sandy so I will just post the one I woke up to this morning. I hope you will enjoy, Emily Lou Harris and her version of "Angel Band".
I hope your Saturday is amazing!!!
