Near The Cross

Since I started writing this blog, I believe I may have woke to more Fanny Crosby hymns as any other writer. I guess that should not surprise me, as her songs have stood the test of time, I've heard them sung so often throughout my life and the words are so very meaningful. First published in 1869, "Near The Cross" is one of those songs that touches my heart each time I hear it.

To me, "Near The Cross" represents a prayer for me to always remember what happened that day at Calvary. Each verse tells the entire story, of my heart staying near the cross. It's a reminder of Jesus' precious blood shed for me, the need for us to accept Jesus for our salvation, the recognition of God's love for us by the cross, and our heavenly reward when our lives here are over.

"Jesus, keep me near the cross, There a precious fountain; Free to all, a healing stream, Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross Be my glory ever, Till my ransomed soul shall find Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found me; There the Bright and Morning Star Shed His beams around me.

Near the cross! O lamb of God, Bring its scenes before me; Help me walk from day to day With its shadow o'er me.

Near the cross! I'll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting ever; Till I reach the golden strand, Just beyond the river."

I hope you will enjoy Wintley Phipps sing "Near The Cross". Mr. Phipps has been featured several times in the Gaither video series. I last hear him sing in our capital rotunda during the John Lewis funeral. He sang two of my all time favorites, "It Is Well With My Soul" and "Amazing Grace".

I pray you will have an awesome day!
