At the church I attended as a teenager, we had a Men's Quartet, a teenage girls group and the boys quartet. I have mentioned each of them several times over the past morning posts. At one point, Ms. Wade selected one member from each group and my Dad to sing at one of regular singings. We practiced a few times and then the night of the singing, the song leader introduced us as Jake (Dad's nickname) and the traitors. (I guess you had to be there and know the situation for that to funny.) "in The Shadow Of The Cross" was the song I remember us singing. So as I wake up to it this morning, it brings back that precious memory. Dad and I never sang much together even though he taught me to love gospel music and old hymns. As much as we loved it together, we should have sung more often.
"In The Shadow Of The Cross" is one of the old hymns that I have rarely heard. The boy's quartet sang it but not too terribly much. I think in the early days of quartets, groups like the Hamoneers, the Rangers and even the original Oak Ridge Boys recorded it but you might be hard pressed to find any groups of today who sing it. Even though I never sang it too much it was always one of my favorites to sing. Maybe because it is one of the few I actually sang with Dad, but I love the words and the music of this song.
"As we journey on t’ward heaven’s shining goal,
We may suffer pain and loss;
Burdens only bring us blessings if we live,
In the Shadow of the Cross.
Are you living in the Shadow of the Cross,
Where the Savior took your place?
By the cross He’ll lead us to that home above,
There we’ll see Him face to face.
On that tree of sorrow Jesus died for all,
Took upon Himself our dross;
As I see Him there I long to ever live,
In the Shadow of the Cross.
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
On the sea of life they toss;
As I see Him there I long to ever live,
In the Shadow of the Cross."
I hope you will enjoy hearing it this morning. There are not too many You Tube versions for me to share but I hope you will blessed by this one.
I pray you will have an awesome Thursday!
