What a difference a day makes! Yesterday, I was blessed to wake up to a song I had heard only a few times to this morning, one that I not only knew (and I guess you could say forgot about), heard it sung many times, and also sang it over and over again with the boy's quartet. There are several memories that come to mind as I started thinking about this song. I'll try to keep it to a short read. LOL
As a young teenager, I remember going with Mom to a lady's house to have some pants hemmed, repaired or something. The lady's husband and I began to talk about gospel songs. He "loaned" me a couple of albums to take home and enjoy. I said "loaned" because he would never let me bring them back and I suspect they are still in my "collection" stored in my garage. Well, one of those albums was of Henry Slaughter.
At the time, I did not know who Henry Slaughter was but I accepted his "loan" graciously and I'm glad I did. Mr. Slaughter was well known during what I would call the early days of gospel music, as a pianist, songwriter and a singer. I believe "If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side" may have been his best known song and most recorded. As I double checked my recollection of Henry Slaughter being the writer of this song, I couldn't believe the number of individuals and groups who recorded this song. (A google search by the song title will bring up many references to Elvis. I guess, Google thinks he was the most popular artist to record it. I never did find a reference to the boy's quartet and I couldn't imagine any group singing it more than we did. LOL)
As I have mentioned many times, Ms. Wade had an amazing talent for selecting songs for the boy's quartet to sing. This I believe was one of our most requested and I don't think we ever sang when "If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side" wasn't sung. We almost always concluded with "If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side" or "That's Enough. (Well, that's at least what I remember at my advanced age. LOL) The couple of times we have got back together to sing a few songs, "If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side" was not one of the songs we sang. Now, I'm wondering why? I guess, they had forgot about it as I had but if we ever sing together again, I will insist of giving " If The Lord Wasn't Walking By My Side" a try.
There was another story I was going to share about singing in Monroe, GA but I can only think of one person who reads the blog that might be interested. So I'll just wait and tell him tomorrow. And "No" Brother John, I was not the insurance agent who lowered himself down the outside of the building to sell insurance to the window washers!
I woke up to a version I heard Ivan Parker sing during one of the Gaither gatherings so I will definitely post that link. But I will also post a link to Henry Slaughter playing and singing and for my "Elvis" cousins, I'll post his link also. I hope you have an amazing start to your week!
