I Will Serve Thee

I just returned home from my Friday workout! I loved hearing this song this morning and hearing it in my heart and thoughts as I worked out. This song brought back very fond memories of my teenage days. One of my first recollections of hearing this song was by the youth choir at Glen Haven Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia. And they had an awesome youth choir and youth group. But my best memories of this song was by the youth group at my church, Belvedere Baptist. Led by Steve and Delores Murrell, I would say we had one of the best youth groups of all time. Kids who loved one another, had fun but most importantly loved God and prayed for one another. Teenagers in my day faced challenges just as teenagers do today. While some of those challenges may be a little different, they still could cause and create problems. But when you are rooted and grounded in your faith and you have close friends 'watching your back' and praying for you it will be ok. I was so fortunate then and now to call them my friends.

Just a few years ago, I had the opportunity to see I believe all of them again. Ms. Wade, our church pianist and music director was celebrating her 89th birthday. Her family wanted to celebrate by inviting everyone to attend. It was a joyous occasion seeing Ms. Wade and all the old friends but it was awesome to have Ms. Wade play for so many of the groups and individuals she had played for over the years. I am still amazed to see all of my youth group. I'm feeling little nostalgic, but as I think about it today, after 45 to 50 years, I find it incredible to feel as if time had stood still and it was like it was back then. With the passing of time, the love and friendships are still there. But I should not be shocked, these relationships was formed on the foundation of the "solid rock", our common love for our savior, Jesus.
