Here I go again, enjoying the morning with a song that I have not heard or thought of in years and years. And what made this morning special was I could hear the old boy's quartet singing it. I'll tell a story of my memory in a minute, but I began to wonder, if I would be able to find a You Tube or internet version of the song for me to post. I believe this is the first time, since I started this blog, I actually looked for the song before I began writing. I was not sure if there would be one but I was glad there was. I wish I had one of the boy's quartet singing "I've Been Changed" but hopefully you will enjoy the Booth Brothers version. (Unfortunately, the Booth Brothers do not have a bass singer so there's no way they could ever sound as good as the boy's quartet. LOL)
Now for the story. Often when the boy's quartet would be invited to sing some place other than our church, we would take the church bus. Our church bus was not one of these new touring type busses with comfy seats, a restroom on board or air conditioning but rather an old wore out school bus that was no longer yellow but painted a green color. That way it would not look like a school bus. LOL Seriously, not making fun, we loved that bus, the many trips and the fellowship as we traveled a few miles.
On the occasion I'm thinking about, we had traveled from Decatur, GA to Alpharetta, GA when the bus decided about 3 to 4 miles from our destination, it did not want to go to the singing. Fortunately, for the quartet, there were some with cars following and they were able to pick us up and get us to the singing on time. As I seem to remember being told, Bob's dad "tinkered" with the bus, got it running and the rest of the folks made it just a little late.
We were singing that night at the old Methodist campground in Freehome, GA. I believe it was the first time we had ever sung at one of these summer camp meetings under an old brush arbor with sawdust floors, big fans blowing, and people using funeral homes fans to cool. Yes it was HOT under that old brush arbor but what an amazing time, singing and people worshipping.
"I've Been Changed" was one of the first songs the boy's quartet learned and we sung it often. I think I knew then, but I certainly know now, Ms. Wade knew how to pick the songs that were "perfect" for teenage boys to sing. I mentioned it in a previous post, but I think she picked songs that were meant more for us teenage guys as they were for others. I think she picked them so the words and melodies would "stick" in our hearts and minds forever. Of course, I can't speak for David, David or Bob, but I know the impact these songs and Ms. Wade had on my life. "I've Been Changed" is just one of many and I'm glad it was my wake up song today. I hope you will enjoy my story and the song.
