It has been quite a while since I've thought about "I've Been A Waitin'" and even longer since I have heard it sung. It's one of the great old hymns in the Church Hymnal, page 349. It's one I remember so well, growing up and hearing it in church and revival services and being sung with great feeling.
The story behind this song is that these are the last words of Granny Solomon as her family gathered around bedside in 1940. Granny Solomon was said to be the oldest person on earth at that time. Apparently the words to this song have resonated with many older people reaching the point in their life as they know they are close to going home.
I believe the last time I thought of this song was several years ago with a sweet client of mine. She and I had developed a close relationship and shared many experiences. As I was visiting one day, I sat by her bedside and we shared some memories. Before long, she took my hand and recited the words to "I've Been A Waitin'". Her voice was soft and difficult to hear. I don't know if she said all the words or but just a few. But, to me, she sounded as if she was singing on stage in a large auditorium. Just a few weeks later, her wait was over and she went home to be with her Lord.
As it is with many of our older hymns, I was not sure if I could find a good video to share. But I did find one that was a blessing to me and I pray it will be for you! I had never seen it before or at least I don't remember. It is of the Old Time Preachers Quartet with Mike Holcomb, singing the lead and sharing a sweet moment.
I pray you will have a great Saturday!
