How Great Thou Art

It was a beautiful way to start my Sunday! In Sunday School this morning, we were discussing various ways God speaks to us. Brother John said he even speaks to us through music giving me the opportunity to share the song of the morning. Proudly and emotionally I shared that I woke up to Elvis singing "How Great Thou Art". I woke up early today but instead of writing my morning blog, I spent the time before church reminiscing about my first memories of this incredible song.

I was a pretty young kid, sitting on the pews of the church I grew up in. During adult choir practice someone pulled out a record player for the choir to listen to "How Great Thou Art". (Now for any really young people reading this post, a record player was an appliance that you could play a plastic disc called a record or album. They where very popular before 8 track tape players. LOL Today, record players are called "audio turntables" and you play "vinyls".) It was decided that Gail would sing the solo and the choir would back her up on the chorus. I found it almost unbelievable that I was remembering this special time, because I was so young and there are a lot of days when I can hardly remember yesterday. LOL But I grew up listening to Gail sing this beautiful song so it would be hard even for me to forget.

Then as a young teenager, my Mom bought the Elvis "How Great Thou Art" album so we could listen to it on our stereo. (Young people you can look up "stereo") I played it a lot. Sang with it a lot and I'm sure drove my Mom, Dad and my sisters crazy. (Young people, if you do your research on stereos, I believe you will find they did not come equipped with bluetooth wireless headphones. And, I liked my music loud also.) Well, I have loved hearing this song my entire life and here I am 65 years old and I loved waking up and hearing Elvis singing it this morning. Those were very special times as a "young people" and as a teenager and I love those precious memories.

I can only think of one other song that may have been sung more and be more familiar world wide than "How Great Thou Art" and that would be "Amazing Grace". "How Great Thou Art" was sung by George Beverly Shea during the Billy Graham crusades all over the world, televised and watched by millions, sung and recorded by country and pop artists alike, "How Great Thou Art" is an incredible memory and a blessing for me today!
