A few weeks ago, Brother John sent a text and said he had a song on this mind something about a sparrow and God was watching over him. (Please pray I'm not rubbing off on him. He's too good of a man.) And over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed an increase to the number of FB posts that reference this song. It almost seems that this has become one of the "theme songs" of this virus period and why not? I've always enjoyed hearing "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" and it was a great joy to wake up to it this morning!
The past couple of days, the weather has been beautiful. I think "spring has sprung". The grass and trees are turning green and the flowers are beginning to bloom. I love this time of the year and being able to get out of the house and do a little yard work (not that I can do much but I can at least make a little effort and say I did. LOL) One of the first things, I put sunflower seeds in the birdfeeder. I knew when I was sitting on the porch resting, I could enjoy watching all the birds feasting. I proceeded to putting out mulch in the front flower beds. It wasn't long before I noticed a big toad frog hop out of the bed into the front lawn. It was like he said, "What are you doing? You are disturbing me." But for the next couple of hours, it was like he followed me all over the front lawn. When I would sit down on the front porch to rest and drink water, he would hop back over in front of me and watch. I kind of enjoyed having a little helper. (Okay, now I know you're thinking, Gary has lost his mind. Social distancing has got to him and he's making friends with a toad. And no, Brother John, I will not make any analogies of this frog watching over me. LOL ) Well, I finished the area where I had disturbed Mr. Toad and he politely, hopped back and dug his little home and stayed the rest of the afternoon.
I stayed outside most of the day (and mostly on the porch) and I told that story, because as I sat there, enjoying the beauty of the day, I could not help but think, Mr. Toad or the birds have no idea of the virus. They did not appear concerned at all and they went about their business as they should, because God watches over them, just as He does us.
"His Eye Is On The Sparrow" is such a comforting song, "and I know he watches me." This song has been sung by so many and heard by millions. It was written in 1905 by Civilla Martin after hearing some sweet words spoken by a severely handicapped friend. The song may be most closely associated with singer-actress, Ethel Waters as she used the title of this song as the title of her autobiography. Mahalia Jackson's recording of this song received a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 2010. Maybe one of the most remembered renditions of this song was, Whitney Houston's powerful vocals in the 2012 remake of the movie "Sparkle". I could go on and on listing the various artists who have sang this song and as listened to many this morning, I decided they are all good. I will share the following. I hope you will enjoy!
