For someone who has always wanted to be a bass singer, this was a great way to start my Saturday. "Hide Me, Rock of Ages" has been one of those songs that almost every quartet since forever (well at least since the song was written LOL) have sung and recorded at least one time.
It was written by Brantley C. George, a Georgia farmer and a song writer of the Primitive Baptist faith. I have heard he wrote "Hide Me, Rock Of Ages" on a brown paper bag in pencil. The song has a copyright date of 1946 and was first recorded by The Stamps Quartet. I would have to spend the rest of the day trying to list all the groups who have sang and recorded this great old song.
My first memory of hearing this was with the church quartet growing up. I loved to hear Bill sing bass and this was one of my favorites. They sang it in an upbeat toe tapping manner, however, I have heard others slow it down and let the bass singer really "show out".
As I scrolled through You Tube this morning, I had my pick of the many, many different renditions and I loved hearing all of them. But in recent months, I have become aware of a young quartet based out of Indiana. They are a set of two brothers who started singing as teenagers in 2014 and their ministry has grown tremendously singing all around the country. I love that these now young family men continue the traditional old time southern gospel quartet singing. I don't think I have ever posted Redeemed Quartet singing before, so I hope you will enjoy hearing them sing page 193 in the Church Hymnal, "Hide Me, Rock Of Ages".
I pray you will have an awesome Saturday!
Love that song and I can just hear you singing in your wonderful bass voice!
