"He washed my eyes with tears, that I might see The broken heart I had, was good for me He tore it all apart and looked inside He found it full of fear and foolish pride He swept away the things, that made me blind And then I saw the clouds were silver lined And now I understand, it was best for me He washed my eyes with tears, that I might see I saw the marks of shame, and wept and cried He was my substitute, for me He died And now I'm glad He came, so tenderly And washed my eyes with tears, that I might see."
I first recall hearing this sweet song by Jimmy Swaggart. Mom would drive us to school and Jimmy Swaggart was on the radio. Honestly, I didn't pay too much attention but every now and then something would catch my attention. I may have heard this song previously but that morning it spoke to me.
"He Washed My Eyes With Tears" was written by Ira Stanphill in 1955. I have mentioned, Rev. Stanphill in previous posts. He wrote almost 600 songs in his life. As you flip through a song book you will see and recognize many songs he wrote, "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow", "Mansion Over The Hilltop", "Room At The Cross", "Suppertime", "Unworthy", "Beyond Tomorrow" to name just a few. But he was not known only for his songwriting but as a preacher, singer and musician. It would have been amazing to attend one of his song services as it is told, Rev. Stanphill would tell the story with each song before he would sing it. I would have enjoyed that tremendously.
I pray you will be blessed hearing "He Washed My Eyes With Tears" this morning and I hope you have a fantastic Friday!
