"He brought me out of the miry clay. He set my feet on the Rock to stay; He puts a song in my heart today, A song of praise, hallelujah!"
What an incredible way to wake up this morning! My favorite quartet featuring my favorite bass singer with a song from the early 90's. This was the title song of The Inspirations album released in 1992. I use to listen to the CD over and over and over again. But I really loved listening and watching them sing it during a concert or service. I would expect other groups have sung this song but I do not recall hearing anyone else ever sing it. As I woke, I realized I had not heard this song in a long time and It made me curious about the song and its history so I did a little early morning research.
The song was written in 1898 by Henry J. Zelley (a Methodist minister) with Henry L. Gilmore (a Methodist choir director) composing the music. Mr. Zelly, known for his evangelistic fervor produced over 1500 poems, hymns and gospel songs. (Now you are equipped with some interesting information that will better prepare you in the event you get in a gospel song trivia contest.) The lesson I'm reminded of with the research of this song, as with many other hymns and songs and the Scriptures is that they have stood the test of time and God's word stands and is never changing. It's also exciting to think ... today inspired writers are creating songs, that years and years from now, will still be sung and blessing generations in the future with God's word.
Here are the links to the studio recorded version and a video live performance from the "Singing In The Smokies". I hope you will enjoy!
