The other day, one of my sweet friends posted on Facebook a picture of a "yummy" looking desert. She called it her "all day singing, dinner on the ground banana pudding". It looked delicious as all her dishes do, but it also brought back so many great memories. "Gettin Ready To Leave This World" is one of the many songs I associate with these wonderful events.
Who remembers these "all day singings and dinner on the grounds" days at our Churches? Often they would be a part of the Church's homecoming celebration and sometimes just because, such as it was the second Sunday in June or something. After the morning worship service, everyone would gather outside and the tables would be full of "covered dishes" brought by the ladies of the church. After a time of eating and fellowship, everyone would go back into the "church house" for an afternoon of singing. Lots of congregation singing, some special singing and often there may be an invited group to sing several songs. It was an amazing time of singing, shouting, preaching, praying! I miss those days! Yes, there was no social distancing back then and flies had to be swatted away, but it was a very special time, spirit filled and God's love flowed all through the crowd attending.
"Gettin Ready To Leave This World" dates back to the mid 1930's and was written by Luther G. Presley. As you flip through the "old song books" you will find many songs written by Mr. Presley. It's another one of those handclapping, foot patting songs that brings joy to sing. As I write this today, I think about Prissy and how she will be missed. I will especially miss her today as I could always count on her to send me a message with this type song as she loved them so much also. We often would message back and forth for a while sharing memories of these old songs and on occasion, she might send me a video of her playing it on the piano for me.
I love the memories! I love the banana pudding, the singing, the people, and those special times that brought so much joy! I pray you will enjoy hearing "Gettin Ready To Leave This World" today!
