How many remember the simple and sweet songs we learned in Sunday School as small children? "Jesus Loves Me This I Know", "The B-I-B-L-E, that's the book for me", "Do Lord, Oh, Do Lord, oh, do remember me" and all the others. What a wonderful way to help lay the foundation of God's love for us at an early age. Here I am 65 years old and remember those days almost like it was yesterday (and sometimes I can hardly remember yesterday. LOL) Those songs we learned in Sunday School made an impact (And of course I have a story to prove it. LOL).
I love the sound of a small child singing. Their sweet voices, pouring out their hearts in song. I have often said kids are smarter today than I was. They catch on to "things" so much faster. (Now that's both good or bad. LOL) Now, I sit there in pure enjoyment, listening and watching a child sing, "Jesus, I Heard You Have A Big House" or watching the children play bells or the kids play violins and flutes and making a joyful noise unto to the Lord. But the pleasure of watching, as the years go by, seeing them grow and continue to attend church, serving their God is awesome to see. And, as on Saturday, being stopped by a young man in the mall, who it seems just a few days ago was singing in the youth choir and now I'm visiting with him, his wife, and his 3 sweet girls. I love the kids and young adults and glad that years ago there were people who loved me and supported me and my "young people" as we grew and developed in our service of our Lord.
Now after my rambling, I will tell my story and the impact of "Do Lord" on my life. I have spoke often of my youth group and how amazing I thought they were. Well, we decided we wanted to conduct a revival and it be fully led by the youth. We had attended other churches and their youth revivals and we thought it was time for us. We went to the "decision makers" with our plans and they agreed. We were so very excited and had great expectations of things that would happen.
After planning who would play what roles, announcing to the church and the community it came time for our revival. We had a young person playing the piano and the organ. Our youth pastor would do the preaching (he was young enough LOL) and somehow, it was decided I would lead the singing and the youth choir. (Still not sure how I got roped in to that, but really I was honored.) The church was full every night and even though it was a youth revival, it was quite nice to have the support of the entire church (that means older people were in attendance also LOL). But of course, with the chosen song leader, the services would not go without an incident and "Do Lord" would play a role.
One night after several congregational songs, it came time for me to announce the choir special. I proudly proclaimed, "Next the choir would like to sing 'Do Lord"". I pivoted and faced the choir and raised my hands. The piano and organ were not playing and there were puzzled looks and smiles on the choir members' faces. I was somewhat puzzled, until one of the girls on the front row whispered, you said we were going to sing "Do Lord". Quite embarrassed, I pivoted back around to the congregation and correctly announced the song we were suppose to sing. Yes, there were some chuckles and the choir director was very red faced but we sang (and I don't remember the song) and I'm pretty sure it was the right one and was good. I'm still not sure why in the world "Do Lord" came to my mind that night, but while I probably wouldn't ever forget "Do Lord" I certainly will never after that.
We had an amazing youth revival and there were several decisions made that week. But it also made our youth group better, stronger and even more supportive of each other than before. I'm glad today for them and the impact they had on my life as well as the song "Do Lord".
Happy Monday!
