This morning I awoke to a song I have not heard since I was a teenager. It is a song written by Bud Chambers in 1959. I read where Mr. Chambers also wrote over 1000 songs but I only recognized the names or two others, "One More River" and "Rich Man, Poor Man". I find it interesting that some songs will be sung and stay popular for a few years but then we stop singing them and move on to others. Yet, some songs written 200 years ago, we still sing today.
"Born To Serve The Lord" is one of those songs, that when you hear it and listen to the words, I wonder why we don't sing it every day. We may often go around questioning things. We may even ask why we are here. The words of this song explains it quite well to me. I was born to serve the Lord as all of us are. During my teenage years, I remember youth groups especially singing this song. But perhaps if you remember it at all you will remember, Vestal Goodman singing it.
"From the dust of the earth My God created man His breath made man a living soul; And God so loved the world That He gave His only Son, And that is why I love Him so.
I was made in His likeness Created in His image, For I was born to serve the Lord. And I can’t deny Him I’ll always walk beside Him For I was born to the serve the Lord.
My hands were made To help my neighbor, My eyes were made to read God’s word; My feet were made To follow His footsteps And my body is the temple of the Lord."
I hope you will enjoy hearing "Born To Serve The Lord" this morning!
