A New Name In Glory

Turn to page 134 in your Church Hymnal and let's sing this great old song! It's amazing to wake to this old song this morning. A song I remember from my childhood but rarely have I heard it since. Some time ago, I was listening to one of the early Gaither videos and it was featured, sung by many of the gospel singers you will know. I don't recall hearing it since until this morning.

"A New Name In Glory" was written in the early 1900's by Charles Austin Miles. Educated as a pharmacist, in 1892 Mr. Miles gave up his career to begin one of writing gospel songs. I read this quote by him; "It is as a writer of gospel songs I am proud to be known, for in that way I may be of the most use to my Master, whom I serve willingly although not as efficiently as is my desire." Mr. Miles is known for many hymns, "Dwelling In Beulah Land", "He Is Mine", and "In The Garden" just to name a couple.

There are many instances in the Bible when God changed the names of individuals. One of the most notable that comes to mind, is when Jesus first met Simon. “And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.” John 1:42 (KJV)

When God changes a name, you know something pretty significant has happened or will happen. It represents a new relationship, a new character quality or a new phase of a life is started. This happens in ways everyday here in our life. For example, when we have a child our names immediately changes from our given name to Mom or Dad. But I love knowing, that Sunday evening when I accepted Christ, a new name was written in Heaven for me and I received a new name to be called here of being a Christian.

I hope you will enjoy hearing "A New Name In Glory" from one of the earlier Gaither videos. I pray you will have an outstanding Wednesday and hope to see you in Prayer Meeting tonight!
